Interview By: Carrick Wenke
Seattle’s Ralph Dozer finally dropped his highly anticipated debut project, compiled as 5 songs made up of different verses he has written over the past few years. Definitely one of the most experimental projects I’ve heard this year, especially my standout favorite, “XFRANCISBEANX”.
How Did you choose the title of your project?
I just turned 20 so the title came from wanting my project to portray my point of view on everything and nothing at the same time.
Can you explain the story behind your artwork and who is the designer?
I designed the cover and put the mouth of a beast over mine, it’s an exaggeration of my deformed jaw. My teeth don’t close lol. The idol behind my head is a nude Miley Cyrus poster from a Rolling Stone Magazine, and the Trinity (mind, soul, body) on her face, was to show she’s no different than me or you.
How long have you been working on this project?
Content and putting the pieces together, about 2 years. All the songs are made of chopped up verses I’ve wrote over the years, that’s why it’s so short, every song is cohesive. The EP was made to connect and exercise minds, it won’t appeal to anyone with no imagination. It’s crazy that it’s lame to flex your strongest muscle: the brain.
Where was is recorded?
Recorded and mixed in my garage.
Who are the Producers?
I produced the entire project except for “White Teeth (Segway)”, that was made by my homie Rudy Wolf, his bass knocks. He’s sick.
Who was Featured?
No features at all. I used some Nipsey vocals and Daniel Johnston vocals, to help paint the message I’m tryna get across. The project was made in the same realm/dimesion/metaphor, there’s a whole ugly world in front of us that people are oblivious too. It’s getting weird out here.
What was your favorite track?
My favorite track has to be “Basketcase” ’cause if your not on board with my vision at that point, you’re an idiot. I also like “The Party” though ’cause the girls like it.
Who would you like to thank for helping you with this project?
I’d like to thank Aramis, Gary, Aaron, Marvin, Ian and all my friends for believing and seeing/knowing I’m worth all the guapper.
