Interview By: Carrick Wenke
Tacoma’s very own Seaan Brooks returns after about a year since his last project with Be Safe, a collection of songs with artwork inspired by Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool.
How Did you choose the title of your project?
The project name came just from a saying that has always stuck with me. Instead of saying goodbye people would say “Be safe” and with everything happening with the shootings by police I’ve been hearing it more and more. So I decided to name the project “Be Safe” because it stuck with me and I knew it would stick with the people as well. Since the project dropped people have been saying it to me a lot jokingly hahaha.
Can you explain the story behind your artwork and who is the designer?
The Cover was designed by Frabah, an artist who’s work I’ve been a fan of for a minute. The story behind it is that I said I wanted something kind of like the Lupe Fiasco The Cool album. He sent over a raw design of the cover and we ran with it. There is not significant meaning behind the symbol on the cover art. I liked it mostly because it looked like a heavy metal rock band album cover, I knew that it would stick out to people and catch their eye.
How long have you been working on this project?
I started recording the project in the middle of May and finished it around the start of July. I knew what I wanted the mood and sound to be like so it didn’t take too long. Plus when you’re in the studio everyday it’s not hard to knock stuff out and I don’t prolong the recording process, I record everyday.
Where was is recorded?
I recorded all the tracks also mixed them myself at Platinum Reign Recording studios in Tacoma … SHOUTOUT to Nudie for allowing me to do that Haha!
Who are the Producers?
Producers on the project are Rell, DJQJ, Khris P, Lasean Camry & a few other producers that have sent me beats over the past couple months from different states and even different parts of the world.
Who was Featured?
The only feature that I have on the project is my younger cousin Cydney J. She featured on the song “For The Summer” and that was actually the last track we did for Be Safe. I gave her the lyrics and idea that I had written. It was her first time ever recording anything and she killed it.
What was your favorite track?
My favorite track on Be Safe has to be “Been Gone”, I say that because it’s the most meaningful to me. I was going through a lot at the time, with losing a lot of family and friends at one time, having multiple seizures at the time and almost losing my own life because of it. With just being beat down by life in general, I just needed to get those emotions out the best way I knew how. I’ve only performed that song once at a college show and got a great review from people that have said they can really relate to that song which is dope as hell to me. So if there was any song that people listen to on this album I hope its that one.
Who would you like to thank for helping you with this project?
I’d like to thank everyone. From the producers to friends that I’ve played tracks for throughout recording and gave me reviews. Nudie again for allowing me to record this project, and most of all to all of my fans and supporters that have been on Twitter and out in the streets spreading the word. THANK YOU!
