Underground Hype: Rob Sims

Interview By: Carrick Wenke

When speaking of the artist, he goes by Rob Sims, when speaking of the freestyle moniker, he goes by Classick. There’s two sides to West Seattle’s Rob Sims, a man who’s been putting in work for quite some time. I was first introduced to Rob by his producer, Anvil, and ever since have been proven that he’s one of the heavy hitters in Seattle.

Who Are You? What Do You Wanna Tell The World About Yourself?

I’m Rob Sims, and I give two fucks about your opinion.

What/Who Are Your Main Inspirations For Making Music?

One, just going through life feeling like there was no way to really complete myself and put myself out there, as being accepted. The only time I’m accepted is when I’m onstage, so that’s just what pushes me and drives me to be the best musician I can be. Secondly, just growing up listening to Jay-Z, that shit has applied so much to my life where I was like “Yo, I gotta do the same shit, I gotta put myself out there the same way and be the same kinda person to model myself like that”.

Who Are Some Producers You Work With?

Right now I work with Anvil, that’s my main producer. I got my dude Cole in L.A.. I try and keep it super local. I’ve worked with Ready Ron, Taane from Slightly Flagrant, just a lot of people. I plan on working with Jay Battle in the near future.

Are You Affiliated With Any Artists Or Crews?

No, I’m not affiliated with anybody. It’s just me, myself and I. Oh fuck, actually Saga Breeze is my dude. I mean, I know a lot of people in the rap scene but other than me, Anvil, and Saga, I’ve just been sticking to myself.

Who Are Some Artists You Wish To Work With In The Future?

Definitely Raz, definitely Fatal Lucciauno, that’s my dude. Nacho (Picasso). Ned, if we can get on the same wave length, that niggas all over the place doing his thing. Even Macklemore one day if I get big enough. Getting on a track with him would be an honor.

Who is God Blessin’?

My whole family.

You Used To Go Under The Name “Classick”, What Prompted The Switch To Rob Sims?

I still do go under Classick, it’s my freestyle alias. When I’m battling cats, that’s who you’re battling. It’s a whole different mindset of rapper, I go by Rob Sims, because that’s the kind of music I create now, it’s like “me” music. Basically my artist name is an expression of my music, so depending on what you’re getting, you’re getting two artists inside of me.

What Is The Status On Your Old Label “Steady On The Clock”?

Steady on the Clock is always gonna be my fam, as far as me as an artist, I had to take my career into my own hands. Over time the stagnation and procrastination of my releases and other things, and problems inside the label, that was gonna be a huge setback and blow for my career. So I had to make the decision but we’re still friends to this day, those are my dudes, I love them. You gotta do what’s best for yourself sometimes.

What was your favorite late 90s/early 2000s Disney channel original movie?

A Goofy Movie

When Can We Expect Your Next Project To Drop?

My next project is scheduled to drop this summer, so I should be dropping a new release in mid-late August.

Anything Else?

I’m very approachable, if you have any questions or wanna connect as an artist, come fucking talk to me, I’m not an asshole
