Underground Hype: Rue

By: Carrick Wenke

When I first discovered Rue it was actually due to me randomly following her on Instagram, not knowing she was in fact an artist, at the time I just thought she was a dope looking person with an equally divine account. Come to find out that she’s in fact a suuuuper dope artist, and one of my favorite new discoveries. After first checking out her Soundcloud single “Bleach” I was impressed at the tender ambiance that I’ve only before heard in Lana Del Rey songs. Upon doing some more searching, I found the video for her next single “Clouds” which is a bit more on the upbeat side (I need you to actually listen to the lyrics when you listen to the song), sounding literally like you’re floating on a cloud. I do need to sidebar real quick and take note that Rue has stated that the inspiration for the video was “Spring Breakers meets Anime Princess vibes”, and when I first watched the video I immediately felt like I was watching the opening scene of Katherine Heigl 1996 classic Wish Upon A Starif anyone knows what I’m talking about…

Who are you? What do you wanna tell the world about yourself?
Hi, I’m Rue. I don’t really think I need to tell anyone anything to about myself.. anything you want to know you can find in my music. The less I tell you the better.

What/Who are your main inspirations for making music?
As cliche as it sounds, I’m inspired by everything around me. To be completely honest I’m inspired a lot by pain. Human emotion is fascinating to me, especially the complexities of the pain people feel and how they react to it. Pain is an inevitable part of life and for some reason people keep trying to keep it a secret.

Who are some producers you work with?
I work with a mix of producers.. my EP, RED, which is finished was produced entirely by a producer out of Toronto, but I really find a lot of inspiration from the people around me who produce – SmokeASac, Jedi P, Wes Period. There’s this one guy I like a lot named Ned who is really tight. But to be completely honest I don’t really look at producers like that, I’m learning to produce myself because I have a very specific sonic pallet – so it’s really whoever can connect with me in that place, whether it’s for one beat or six. I’m very specific and I know what I want.

Are you affiliated with any artists or crews?
No, but I’m lucky to be surrounded by a lot of amazing people who keep me inspired.

Who are some artists you wish to work with in the future?
Kid Cudi. I don’t really look up to artists but he speaks to me, as I think he does to a lot of people. He’s changed a lot of lives and touched a lot of people… but his ability to connect to people and their experiences is to me beyond the normal human ability.

Is your bitch bad or boujee?
Lol no. Bad and Moody.

You stated in a previous article the video for the song “Clouds” was inspired by Spring Breakers meeting an Anime Princess vibe. The video and song are both amazingly creative, was there any particular songs or music you were inspired by to create the sound of the song at the time?
Thank you! The song I wrote when I was under the impression the guy I was dating was also getting with my best friend at the time so that pretty much just lent itself perfectly to the writing process. I wrote that song half on the way to the studio. I was in my head so I just put it out into the song. It was funny because I considered that the “happiest” record off of the EP but everyone likes to remind me that its actually kind of depressing. So the song was pretty much inspired by real life and my friend telling me to just put it in a song.

The song describes what it’s like to deal with the let downs of relationships people think they are ready for when they are indeed not. Do you have any advice for ladies out there dealing with the same problems?
My advice would be just to know who you’re dealing with. It’s just as easy to make excuses for people as it is to judge them based off of what other people have done to you.. So just take the time to get to know the person and feel it out… the hardest thing with relationships is to be fair, because we’ve all been through pain and it messes with us. Just be human. Unless they are actually sociopathic or cheating on you in which case love yourself and leave.

When Can we expect your next project to drop?
RED drops on Valentine’s Day.

Anything Else?
Pay Attention.
